Jen’s Take

Recently, I completed my very own NYC local experience, NYC’s Rat Pack Academy. The city has a way of delivering the goods when you least expect it. Indeed a fan of the original and talented Rat Pack member Frank Sinatra, the name immediately caught my attention. Unique and off the beaten path, surely sign me up for this Rat Pack!

Program

Purpose: To educate residents about city rats while empowering them to be part of the solution in mitigation efforts.

Step 1Virtual Meeting: While two hours of rat slides, very informative wanting more.

Step 2City Walk: Engaging, one-hour session with a rat expert. Even more admirable than her city nickname “Rat Czar,” is her dedication to the subject and ability to motivate participants.

Step 3Volunteer Project: Brilliant idea, NYC. Not only did I learn about rats, but I also gained the opportunity to become a better neighbor—effective!

Takeaways

Female rats can have up to 84 pups per year, obviously we are outnumbered.

We’re not so different, rats and humans—we both love food, housing, and a short commutes.

Although volunteering to pack groceries for seniors is the exact opposite of “rat behavior,” it’s something I’ll definitely be repeating.

Thank you NYC Department of Health for this Local NYC experience! From now on, whenever I hear Frank Sinatra’s Strangers in the Night, I’ll think of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself—and the nocturnal rodents.
